Experiences of isms–racism, sexism, ageism, religionism, heterosexism and others–are ubiquitous in our culture, as are more subtle microaggressions and systemic bias towards power down groups. In our practice we keep these issues in focus when a client has been hurt by them and help each person to grow in their advocacy skills while making tactical decisions about how they wish to proceed. Dr. Lia is on the faculty of an HBCU and has offered countless trainings on DEIB issues for schools, employers, corporations and non-profits. She has also published works in this space.
Dr. Dave has created the concept of “positive multiculturalism” which he defines as “To explore and understand our cultural differences and to learn how an understanding of such can enrich our professional and personal missions. This process endorses the concept that all humans are impacted by cultural differences in a manner that traverses a wide continuum of reaction, some of which are conscious and some of which are unconscious, some of which are adaptive and some of which are not. In considering these issues positive multiculturalism eschews the promotion of shame and embraces the promotion of enrichment.”
