About 10% of adults and 15% of youth experience a mood disorder each year, with one in five people experiencing a mood disorder across their lifespan. Indeed, in its most recent survey, the US Census Bureau reported that 55% of Americans feel “down, depressed or sad” several days a week–with 1 in 4 feeling that way most of the time. However, fewer than 10 to 15% of adults and 20 to 25% of youth receive adequate talking therapy for their depression.
Depression convinces its host of three primary thoughts: 1. “Everything sucks!” 2. “It’s your fault!” 3. “It’s not going to change!” When a person, of any age, thinks this way for long enough, it can make suicide feel like a rational choice; indeed, suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-34. It doesn’t have to be this way. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which weaves in interventions from the science of happiness, can be positively transformative. Indeed, Dr. Dave has authored a book, published by Springer Press, for mental health professionals to learn how to do such treatments with youth. When medication is warranted, we also partner with prescribers to optimize effectiveness and treatment outcomes. Moreover, we offer back-up treatments when CBT is insufficient; these include Interpersonal Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy. Finally, we also offer treatment for bipolar disorder that is multi-layered given how debilitating bipolar disorder can be across all domains of a person’s life.
